The executive director of the Peruvian Institute of Asparagus and Vegetables (IPEH), Carlos Zamorano, said the National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa) had recently informed them that the Government of the People's Republic of China had given the green light for the first exports of Fresh asparagus from Peru.
He noted that a delegation of inspectors from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China had visited Peru earlier this year to see their fields, plants, and verify that the phytosanitary conditions comply with the Chinese export protocol for this product, and that all that had been pending was the issuance of a report.
"They took their time, but we received a positive statement on the subject last week and we are waiting for the Senasa to officially inform us of this fact," he said.
He then said that, once they had the document, the IPEH would inform the plants and companies that were approved the basis of the export process. "We hope it's as soon as possible so we can start trying out a market that, at least theoretically, will be very interesting for fresh Peruvian asparagus exports," he added.
Regarding the amount of fresh asparagus that will be sent to China, he said: "There will be a short start in which we'll ship some containers to see how the market behaves. It is necessary to make a previous study to determine the size of China as a market."
It's worth noting that China could become the second destination for this flagship product, after the United States, as China requires it to produce fresh vegetable preserves, which would be aimed at European markets.
