US: Onion supply tight

Onion supply for North America is currently tight, raising prices accordingly. The Jumbo Yellow variety is $7-$8 in the Oregon and Idaho regions, but $9-$11 in Imperial Valley California with some shippers completely sold out until May 11th. “The Imperial Valley started production early, but are low in supply due to demand,” explains Shay Myers of Owyhee Produce.

The increase in demand originates from Texas’ difficulty this season with rains lowering the onion yield. This results in consumers in the Southwest being unable to purchase locally grown onions. “Typically Texas would still be purchasing onions, but not at this amount,” states Myers, “this time of year consistency and weather are very important. They are connected and when they are not balanced, onion yield is lower.”

Despite the supply being tight, multiple states are still in the American market. New York still has limited supply of onions; some products are available in Arizona as well as Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. “Typically, there are only two or three regions within the United States concurrently in the market at the same time,” adds Myers. The market will be volatile until the first week of June when operations switch from Imperial Valley to Central valley.
