Gentle giant of fresh produce sorting and packing

Maintaining top quality while packing delicate fruit at ever faster speeds is crucial for the highly competitive fresh produce sector and an area where New Zealand company BBC Technologies has an edge.

The company’s latest innovation, the CURO-16 Filling System, has been attracting keen interest at recent international events, including the Southeast Regional Fruit and Vegetable Conference in Savannah, Georgia, where it was launched, Fruit Logistica in Berlin and the Global Berry Congress in Rotterdam.

CURO–16 has been proven to consistently pack up to 240 clamshells per minute—significantly more than competitor products which claim packing rates of up to 180 per minute.

The reception for CURO-16 has been glowing—the first global production run has sold out and BBC Technologies is increasing capacity to keep up with demand.

International sales and marketing manager Jason Walker says customers are enthusiastic about the CURO-16’s ability to achieve increased throughput whilst still gently handling the fruit.

The company is the world’s leading supplier of blueberry sorting and packing machinery and offers a suite of hi tech solutions for packing and processing berries, including a range of fruit sorting machines that are renowned for their gentle handling while being able to remove over 80 percent of soft or damaged fruit. On the back of that market leading position, it has expanded its suite of equipment to also sort and pack cherries, small tomatoes, cranberries and other delicate products such as olives and mushrooms.

BBC Technologies is enjoying rapid growth in sales in the European region, servicing its customers from an expanding office staffed by dedicated sales staff in Horst, in the province of Limburg in The Netherlands.

Murat Durgun, recently appointed Sales Manager for Southern Europe, Turkey and the Middle East, says BBC Technologies equipment is meeting strong demand from cherry and blueberry producers who need smart solutions that sort and pack delicate fruit quickly while ensuring shelf life and flavour are maintained.

“There is huge growth taking place in Southern European production of both cherries and blueberries with companies moving to automated systems to ensure they win a slice of the expanding market.

Company CEO Geoff Furniss says a key strength for BBC Technologies in Europe is the calibre of the staff it has on the ground.

“Murat Durgun is a great example. He knows the markets in Southern Europe extremely well, speaks the right languages to engage with customers at all levels of the value chain and is familiar with the international fresh produce environment. Our staff are able to offer a level of service that is second to none.”
