Warm weather this winter brought on lettuce crops earlier than usual and made for plentiful supplies earlier this year. But with a front-loaded season, supply gaps have popped up.“If you have a heavy spot at one point in the season it will bring a light spot later,” said Mark McBride of Coastline Produce. “We're just getting into the edge of the light spot, so it could be dicey supply-wise through the first two weeks of May.” Less lettuce has brought with it higher prices, and McBride said those prices are likely to last into May. On April 16, prices for a carton of iceberg 24s were between $9.00 and $12.61 out of Salinas, and prices for a carton of Boston 24s were between $16.45 and $20.61.
“We're done with desert acreage, and our company is getting all of our lettuce from Salinas,” said McBride. “It's been challenging with the weather, but with normal weather back in Salinas, I think we'll get caught up.”
