Jan van Nes of Le Roux Group:
"Cool spring causes late start of grape season in South Africa"

Tholen - Week 51 meant the start of the grape season for the South African company Le Roux Group. The first variety to be harvested was the Prime Seedless. The season started somewhat later than usual throughout South Africa, but the later varieties are expected to start at their normal time.

"Because of the fine winter conditions we are expecting a good harvest with excellent sizes," says Jan van Nes of Le Roux Group. The weather conditions are not ideal, though. The lower temperatures in spring have caused a delayed harvest. Furthermore, there has been quite some rain, but Jan van Nes says this has not (yet) caused any problems.

The Le Roux Group, which is located in the Bergrivier production area, has early varieties as well as late ones and both seeded and seedless grapes. The main variety for the company is the Red Globe. Le Roux Group exports only large, extra large and XXL sizes. Most of the grapes are destined for Europe according to contracts. The Far East is an important destination as well for Le Roux Group. "We put quality first and have all of the needed certificates like EurepGap, Nature’s Choice and BRC," says Jan van Nes.
