Kees van den Bosch, Freeland:

"Most open ground vegetables mediocre expensive"

If you're looking for positive news, Kees van den Bosch of Freeland is not the man to speak to at the moment. "The sales of open ground vegetables are dramatic. There's not much fun about it. In the first week of the year the sales were still quite quick, but after that it has only gone downhill. The prices are generally quite high, but it's a mediocre expensive. It's never that wild the week before and during the Fruit Logisitca, so we're hoping that the market will pull up again next week."

"The cauliflower prices are reasonably high. French cauliflower is sold for 9-11 Euro and the Spanish cauliflower, in which there were quite a lot of shortages, is sold for around 8.50-9 Euro. The broccoli, on the other hand, is on the short side, with a price of 5-6 Euro per box. The carrot price is between 17 and 20 cents right now," continues Kees.

"There was a slight shortage in Spanish iceberg lettuce, which resulted in prices of 8-10 Euro, but a few days later the prices were back to the level of 5-6 Euro. The price of leek is still dramatic with a level of 3-35 cents. There should be a reorganisation there, but there is a lot of product coming on the market from family companies, especially in Belgium, who are apparently holding out," says the open ground vegetable grower.

"The Russian boycott will influence the open ground vegetable sales, but the weather hasn't been cooperating either. A good frost could change this, but it doesn't look like this will happen any time soon," concludes Kees.

Freeland is a stall holder at Fruit Logistica, Hall 1.2, stall D-05.
