Peru: Inia 325-Poderosa, new high performance potato

There will be a new potato variety in the market. The Inia 325-Poderosa has a vertical resistance to late blight, high yields of 35-40 tons per hectare, and an appreciable content of micronutrients with excellent cooking quality for various dishes.

This variety was developed by the Northern Consortium, comprised by INIA's Experimental Station of BaƱos del Inca de Cajamarca, the International Potato Center (CIP), and Pataz Association, with the support of Poderosa mining.

The new variety, which was approved via Chief Resolution No. 0364-2014-INIA dated December 2, 2014, was presented in Huamachuco.

The head of INIA, Alberto Dante Maurer Fossa, said he hoped the variety would soon be available at the regional and national levels. The Inia 325-Poderosa is the result of many years of research conducted in Peru.

The head of the National Agricultural Innovation Program in Tubers and Roots, Hector Cabrera Hoyos, noted that they had performed comparative studies in the farmers' fields, so they could cultivate this genotype and evaluate its benefits against other commercial potato varieties in different areas of the country. The tests took place in more than 15 locations in the region of La Libertad, Cajamarca and Puno. The result was a potato with nutritional benefits that also reduces the risk level presented by the temperatures and climate changes.
