Frank Jansen:

"Leek market not so good"

The warm autumn hasn't really been stimulating for the leek market, but according to Frank Jansen of cultivation and packaging company Jansen from Etten-Leur it's too easy to blame the difficult price situation on this. "We have had low prices for almost twenty months. The price of leeks has been around 15-20 cents for a while. You don't need a calculator to work out that that's not working."

"In previous years there was always someone looking for leeks, but over the last few months the demand has been lacking. The quality of the leek is good, but this is the same in other countries around us. England, Germany and Scandinavia have enough of their own production. And we need export. If that demand doesn't get going, we have a problem," continues Frank. "Usually leeks would go to Russia, but it's too far to blame the difficult market on this alone."

"To be honest, I thought there would be a reduction of the area last year, but it didn't happen. The early plants have to be ordered again. There is no way growers aren't starting to wonder. It can't go on like this, or it will turn into a mushroom or chicory scenario," concludes Frank. "We need a cold period, so there's some more demand for leek. There are two options: growers will have to stop, or demand will have to increase."
