Peruvian mango season kicks off later than usual

Alfonso Matta Vattier and Gretel Castro de Bressy (Passion Fresh)

The mango harvest kicked off recently for the Peruvian company Passion Fresh. According to Gretel Castro de Bressy, "overall, the season in Peru has started late and smaller volumes than last year are expected. The Exporters Association says that production volumes will drop by 40%. We believe that the volume will not drop as much, but there will be a lot more fruit during the rainy season (January and February) which will have to go to the domestic market."

These estimations are made based on the flowering of the Kent variety, the most common in Peru, which has been about 50% lower. This will not result in larger calibres, which according to Gretel will range mostly between 10 and 12.

Gretel says that "it is important for importers to keep track of the situation and take fewer risks with their imports, thus protecting the market."

Fresh Passion specialises in the premium sector, shipping exclusively by air. "In this sector we are registering a minimum annual growth of between 60 and 70%. We work with just two clients and two brands per country and our strategy focuses on growing with them," said Gretel.

The company's main destinations include countries like Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain or Italy.

Fresh Passion also offers free technical advice to producers globally; a service with which the company is very satisfied. Also, "with the start of the campaign, I would like to call attention to the quality and prestige of Peruvian mangoes," concludes Gretel.
