Prince de Bretagne introduces new packaging to promote kale sales

The kale season started for Prince de Bretagne in early September, and harvest volumes have continued to increase. According to Gaëlle Juton, the reason for this growth is that “The product has been a success, so there have been more plantings this year to cover the market demand.”

Last year, the company had a total production of between 10 and 15 tonnes; a volume which could grow by up to four times this season, reaching 50 tonnes. Gaëlle explains that “The cultivation of kale has served as a means for diversification for cabbage growers, and cauliflower to a lower extent.”

The demand for kale has been growing in countries like Germany, the Netherlands and the United States, and Gaëlle says that, unlike these countries, the product was fairly unknown in France. “With the recent media attention of this cabbage, more people want to find it. This is only the beginning, and the market will continue to grow step by step.”

As a result, French consumers are gradually incorporating kale into their diets. Gaëlle states that recipes are mostly from countries like Germany or the UK, including salads, soups and pastries. She also assures that “I believe that we currently ensure a fair price, considering the product demands a lot of manual work.”

This year, in addition to selling it loose, Prince de Bretagne has developed a new kale packaging format where it is sold together as a bunch. “It is very practical for supermarkets, as it allows them to promote the product and sell it as a commodity.” concludes Gaëlle Juton.
