Japan: Prices of fruit juice increasing by 10%
Prices of 100-percent orange and grapefruit juice in box containers are rising by about 10 percent because of hurricanes in Florida and a shift of farmers from citrus to biofuel ingredients. Kirin-Tropicana Inc., Japan's largest juice producer, will increase the suggested retail prices of nine products, including orange juice, on May 22.
A 1-liter pack from its standard Tropicana Home Made Style line will cost a tax-exclusive 284 yen, up 24 yen, while a 500-milliliter pack will run 143 yen, up 13 yen. Two products from the high-end Tropicana Pure Premium line will be priced at 450 yen, up 70 yen, or about 18 percent.
Nippon Milk Community Co. will raise the prices of its juice products by about 10 percent, also on May 22. Morinaga Milk Industry Co. increased the suggested retail prices of its Sunkist products by 10 percent on May 1.
One-liter products cost 220 yen, up 20 yen, and 500-milliliter products are priced at 110 yen, up 10 yen. "In 2006, the prices of ingredients were 11 percent higher than in 2004," a Morinaga official said. "We expect the prices to continue to climb."
Meiji Dairies Corp. also raised the suggested retail prices of its Minute Maid products by about 8 percent on May 1.
Concentrated fruit juice, especially orange juice, is in short supply worldwide partly because of hurricane damage to orchards in Florida.
Growing demand for automotive biofuel is also prompting orange growers in Brazil, a major citrus producer, to switch to sugarcane, an ingredient of the eco-friendly fuel, industry officials said.
