Lower Saxony kale season to start soon

In the German state of Lower Saxony the mild temperatures are enabling the kale to continue growing through the autumn. The kale season is starting to get going with the first offers in the restaurants, reports the German website Proplanta.de.

Kale lovers can look forward to a good season, says Erich Klug, vegetable cultivation advisor for the Agricultural Trade for Lower Saxony. Healthy plants lead to expectations of a rich harvest of excellent quality.

All over Germany kale is grown on around 1,000 hectares, of which almost half in Lower Saxony. If you think it is too early to eat kale there is a wide supply of other vegetable varieties to chose from. At the moment various types of lettuce, cabbage, sprouts, kohlrabi, leek and celery are being freshly harvested in Lower Saxony.

The kale won't develop its full flavour until the temperatures decrease. When it gets colder the plants prepare for winter and turn starch into sugar. This develops the milder taste of kale and makes it easier to digest.
