Nergi, the mini kiwi grown in France
The Nergi is a berry, original called Kiwaï or Siberian kiwi, measuring between 2-3cm. It is not GM and has existed for centuries in the wild in Asia. Due to its fragility it has been crossed to obtain a fruit that is more resistant to our climate. Following 3 years of research, the harvest is deemed sufficient to be marketed in France.
The Nergi is mainly produced by Prim’land in the South West of France, near the areas where it is consumed.
It’s flavour is similar to a kiwi, although this smaller version is less acidic. It can be eaten with it's skin, an advantage to those who want to eat on the move. It can be stored for 3 days at room temperature and one week in the fridge.
As with other fruits, the Nergi can be included in many recipes, sweet and savoury. They are available from mid-September to the end of November.
Prices are €2.50-€3 a 125g punnet in the fruit and berry section of large supermarkets.
