The delegate of the SAGARPA, Pedro Luis Benitez Velez, said that 11,000 hectares of avocado would be added to the export program after they complied with the safety, health and quality protocols of the departments of Agriculture from Mexico and the United States.
Benitez Velez stated that there were a total of 39 packing facilities that were certified in 28 municipalities of Michoacan to start exporting avocados to the United States between October 15 and April 14, 2015.
He said that last season they had started with an area of 78,000 hectares and that they would start with more than 89,000 hectares for the 2014-2015 season, 8 percent more than in the 2013-2014 season.
He noted that municipalities that would export were: Acuitzio, Apatzingán, Ario, Cotija de la Paz, Erongarícuaro, Hidalgo, Huiramba, Irimbo, Los Reyes, Madero, Nuevo Parangaricutiro Parácuaro, Peribán Purépero, Quiroga, Salvador Escalante, Tacámbaro, Tancítaro, Tangamandapio, Taretan, Tingambato, Tingüindín, Tocumbo, Turicato, Tuxpan, Uruapan, Ziracuaretiro and, starting this year, Tlazazalca.
In total, 20,828 certified orchards, covering an area of over 89,000 hectares in Michoacan, which benefit 13,577 producers, will be exporting their fruit; and this can generate more jobs, more wages and majors benefits to Michoacán, Benitez Velez concluded.
