Mexican avocado sales increase by 29%

Mexican avocado exports in the first half of the year amounted to $794,446,000, a 29 percent increase when compared to the same period in 2013. 

According to preliminary data from Mexico's Ministry of Agriculture, the estimated export volume between January and June 2014 totalled 353,000 tons. 

The Mexican avocado was marketed in 21 markets among which the United States, Japan, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, France, Guatemala, Spain, China, Netherlands, Hong Kong, UK, Germany, Singapore and Belgium stand out for their economic value. 

China had one of the largest increases in sales, as avocado exports to that country in the first six months of the year amounted to $2,970,000, i.e. about 1,260 tons of this product, 724 percent more on an annual basis. 

The Netherlands also had significant growth in this period, as Mexican avocado exported 293.7 tons of avocado to this destination, i.e. $647,000 dollars, almost three times more than what was sold the first half of 2013. 

The United States, the main export market, bought avocados for $651,328,000 dollars, 31 percent more than in the first half of last year. 

The second most important destination for this product was Japan, which recorded a value of $ 61.7 million for the reference period, i.e. a 29 percent increase; followed by Canada with 40.6 million, 33 percent increase; Costa Rica, 12.7 million, up by 18 percent, and El Salvador, $ 9.3 million, up by 13 percent compared to the same period in 2013. 

According to preliminary figures by the Ministry of Agriculture, agricultural exports (including agricultural, livestock and fishery products) amounted to nearly 6,700 million dollars in the first half of this year. 

The Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) noted that Mexico produces about 1,467,000 tons of avocados every year in 27 states. 

The states with the greatest productions are Michoacán, 1,193,000 tons; Jalisco, 87,000 tons; the State of Mexico, with 56,000; Nayarit, with 34,000; Morelos, with 27,000, and Guerrero, with 14,000 tons. The cultivation of this product is carried out in 168,113 hectares.
