Largest fresh market in Africa aims to continue moving forward
Joburg market is the largest fresh produce market in the African continent; some even argue that it is the world’s largest in terms of volume, but it still needs its growers in order to remain relevant. “One may ask why the farmers who have been using our market for generations are still doing so, and this is due to the products and services that we offer,” affirms Simangele.
The market plays a huge role in the economy, as it decides what products go in the shelves. “We are coming up with a project called ‘the market of the future’, which is meant to make sure that we comply with the food standards and that the cold chain is never broken. Additionally, we are opening up opportunities for our women in an effort to transform the market,” explains the CEO.
Over one million products are handled at Joburg market and efforts are constantly made to ensure the availability of most fruits and vegetables throughout the year. “Our role in ensuring food security is very important, because everyone has to eat; food will always remain relevant. This is why we wish to continue strengthening our partnerships with producers and companies,” concludes Simangele Sekgobela.
