Univeg acquires major share in Turkish cherry company Alara
Univeg will be one of the main shareholders in the Turkish company Alara. Both companies will co-operate in supplying cherries and figs to their global customer base. Active in 23 countries, the Univeg Group has a annual sales turnover of 2.2 billion euros. This makes the company one of the largest fresh produce distributors worldwide. Univeg and the Alara shareholders have agreed upon the acquisition. The transaction is to be approved by the competition authorities.
Alara is the largest distributor of fresh figs worldwide and the most important exporter of cherries to Europe. The company sells its products to the global retail industry. In 2006, Alara's market share represented 22% of the total EU cherry export and 50% of the total import of Turkish cherries in the United Kingdom.
The partnership with Alara enables Univeg to strengthen its position in this growing industry. The knowledge and expertise with regard to growing, packing and exporting fresh produce will stimulate the export of other Turkish products and strengthen their position on the Turkish market.
“Thanks to their own plantations of 225 ha, their quality products, well-known name, and innovative technologies, Alara was able to gather quite some experience in growing, packing and exporting cherries and fresh figs," says Hein Deprez, Univeg's CEO.
"Using the strong synergies, Alara's business will grow worldwide and we will strengthen our leading position in the cherry and fig industry. The worldwide network and knowledge of our partner, will enable us to diversify our product assortment," according to Kerim Taner, Alara's CEO.
Alara's organisation will not change and Kerim Taner will remain Alara's chairman and CEO.
At the same time Univeg has acquired the Belgian company New Fruit Company NV. NFC is Alara's parner for the marketing, sales and distribution of Alara's productions among European retailers. The integrations enable the Univeg Group to increase their market share. Both acquisitions won't affect the positions of Alara's and NFC's staff, as their activities are complementary.
