Losses close to US$ 25 million
Tomato producers in Paraguay face critical situation
Tomato producers in Paraguay are facing difficulties due to over-production in the sector, which led to losses of US$ 25 million in October 2007, Mr. Juan Martínez, president of the Paraguayan Chamber of Fruit and Vegetable Producers, told ABC News.
Mr. Martínez explained that the volume of tomatoes available for purchase in the market exceeds internal demand and as a result tomatoes are rotting in storage. He added that smuggling is making the problem even worse: “Illegal tomatoes arriving from Brazil are simply aggravating the problem of over-production”.
In the first week of November, 5,000 tons of tomatoes that had entered the market illegally were confiscated and burnt. Mr. Martínez reported that over 100 tons of tomatoes are rotting every day, because supply is much higher than demand.
