Switzerland: Clearly more organic apples produced than in previous years

After supplies of Swiss organic apples sold out by May last year, supplies this year are clearly larger, reports German website Gabot.de. Supplies of organic pears, by contrast however, see only residual amounts left.

According to figures from Bio Suisse and Suisscofel, at the end of March 2014, there was still 2.218 tons of organic apples in storage. This is an average 30% more on the previous year. It was already expected that supplies of organic pears would be completely sold out by the end of April, and by the end of March, 27 ton was available.

At the end of March there were 29,126 ton of 'Suisse Garantie' hand apples in storage, which according to the 'Schweizer Obstverband' and Swisscofel is 109 ton less than at the same time last year and around 3,727 ton less than 2012. There are around 723 ton of 'Suisse Garantie' hand pears stored of which almost all, 715 ton, are of the Kaiser Alexander variety.
