Cultivation area and climate affects potato flavour.

Not every potato is the same, the taste can vary depending on where it is cultivated and climate, the German news magazine 'Focus' reports on it's website.

Where it is cultivated and the climate impacts on the flavour of the potato, explains Jutta Kling of the Competence Centre of Organic Agriculture, Rheinland-Pfalz, during the 'Slow-Food' fair at Stuttgart. "The more difficult it is to grow a potato, the better the flavour", says Kling.

The yield is smaller in poor soil. "The potato has greater difficulty growing there. As a result they develop more flavour", according to Kling. That does not mean that everyone should like these potatoes. Kling noticed this when she let people taste a, Belana, a organically gown breed of potato. Potatoes coming from different regions from the Pfalz to the Vulkaneifel can vary considerably in taste and consistency.
