Del Monte to invest 80 million dollars in Honduran bananas

German Zepeda, a leading figure for Honduras' banana sector, informed that the multinational Del Monte will purchase more than five million boxes of the fruit from Honduras this year.

He stated that "for these companies, it is important to find producer groups that can supply between five and eight million boxes of bananas."

He estimated that the multinational would invest between seventy and eighty million dollars, which corresponds to about six to seven dollars per box.

According to the producer, this will entail a sustainable increase in production volumes, although not necessarily an expansion of the banana plantations.

Del Monte operates in Costa Rica and Guatemala.

According to Zepeda, northern Honduras has approximately nine thousand hectares of banana plantations.
