New Zealand Picked for 2009 World Potato Congress
Idaho spud producers will have to travel a bit further than Boise to attend the next World Potato Congress. The session, last held in Idaho in 2006, will open in Christchurch, New Zealand in March, 2009. The Congress is held ever three years.
The 7th Congress will occur for the first time in a South Pacific nation, hosted by the Potato Product Group of Horticulture New Zealand. More than 500 delegates are expected to attend.
"Christchurch, the Garden City and Festival Center, with many outstanding contrasting amenities, will be an ideal venue for delegates to our tri-annual Congress," says Allan Parker, World Potato Congress, Inc., president.
Potato Product Group Chairman Terry Olsen says the industry was extremely pleased to have the opportunity to showcase Christchurch and New Zealand to potato industry leaders from throughout the world. The Congress attracts growers, traders, processors and manufacturing interests.
The Christchurch Convention Centre will be the main venue for the Congress, with delegates participating in a variety of seminars, presentations by industry leaders, and scientific dialog. Delegates will have an opportunity to visit local farms and processing facilities.
Christchurch received the nod for the Congress as a second choice. Paris was the designated site for the 2009 event, but the location was changed due to what officials label only as "unforeseen circumstances."
The Congress functions to promote information sharing among global potato interests, including a wide representation from developing nations. More than half the world's potato crops are produced in emerging countries.
