Mexico: Tomato prices up 100%

Because of large weather changes in recent weeks, Mexico’s fruit and vegetables sector is facing a possible price increase of 100%, in particular in regard to tomatoes. This on top of current increases of industry price levels.

Regarding the tomato, price fluctuations throughout the year are no surprise, says trader Luis Enrique. It is expected that the price of tomatoes will be at least 20 pesos per kilo in a few weeks. "When it rains, the fields flood, delaying work. Farming machinery use up more diesel and expenditures are higher.”

This has already led to the prices of tomatoes going from 6 pesos to 10 pesos within a week. The prices may stabilize as greenhouse tomatoes reach the market, according to the trader.
