US (WA): Asparagus season gets an early start

The asparagus season in Washington got off to an early start in Washington this year, but cold temperatures have slowed down production. Volumes are expected to be higher than they were last year.

“We started the Washington asparagus season on April 2, which is a week earlier than normal,” said Phil Clouse, grower field representative for Gourmet Trading Company's Washington operation. But the early gains that the quick start to the season brought were subsequently offset by cold weather which held back volumes. Clouse noted that the net effect will likely be a production schedule that will stick close to the timing usually encountered.

Though the season is still in its first month, volumes are expected to top last season's production, according to James House, who is in charge of asparagus procurement for Gourmet Trading.

“We plan on having a little more volume this season compared to last year,” said House. “We also anticipate excellent quality once the fields have been cleaned and we get normal heat units.” That extra volume will be welcome by Gourmet Trading, added Chloé Varennes, marketing manager for Gourmet, especially as demand for asparagus is on the rise.

“Asparagus is becoming increasingly popular with consumers because it cooks quickly and adds a touch of elegance to any dish,” she said. “We've also seen increased demand for our bagged asparagus because of its extended shelf life.”

The asparagus season in Washington began at the start of the month and is expected to continue through June.
