Function: COO to take over as CEO in 18 months
Company: Agricultural Holding company controlling various companies
Region: Southern Africa with home base in Harare, Zimbabwe
Our client is a family owned holding company of agricultural and forestry assets in Southern Africa. It controls various companies turning over in excess of USD 110m. The assets of the group are situated in Mozambique, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The group is a large and long-term owner of land and water rights in the region and has built the premier agro-industrial management team in the region. The company has experienced rapid growth over the past ten years. Current projects and the existing land and water base imply a strong continued growth path going forward. The group is run from its Harare offices, however the position requires extensive travel within the region. On behalf of our client we are seeking candidates for the position of:
Chief Operating Officer (COO)
to take over as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in 18 months
Excellent expatriate remuneration package
Tasks and responsibilities
- Assist the CEO in the execution of the group’s strategy
- Prepare to take over as CEO after 18 months
- Lead the interaction between head office and the individual operations
- Focus on companies within the group in need of intervention
- Revamp and develop a healthy organizational culture, values and reputation in all its markets and with all key stakeholders and employees
- Lead the integration of separate management structures within the group and drive the integration of businesses
- Drive functions and improved organizational performance through the executive teams in the companies
- Ensure and improve detailed operational control within the subsidiaries at every level
- Execute responsibilities according to lawful / ethical standards
- Gain in depth knowledge of all the companies operations in order to take over as the group’s CEO on 1 January 2011
- Build the relationships required to successfully lead the group in conjunction with shareholders
Qualifications & Experience
- Relevant experience at top management level will be given a strong preference
- An agricultural / forestry / business / financial degree from a reputable university or academy / college
- Candidates with a business/financial degree have additional experience & proven affinity with agriculture or forestry
- At least 10 years experience in a relevant industry, with strong performance and experience at a senior level
- A track record indicating the ability to lead and drive a rapidly growing organization
The person
- Must be a strong character and someone whom most of the employees (particularly senior employees) can look up to
- Must be someone with the capacity to look at a group from a fresh perspective and prepared to make bold decisions
- Must be a results oriented personality and a positive role model for the organization’s employees.
- Must be a transformational leader who can lead a strong team from the front
- Must be non-biased towards the various cultural and ethnic identities within the countries concerned
