Responsibilities:

  • Develop, ensure error-free implementation of a reliable growing process, within USDA organic standards.
  • Consistently producing high quality, cost competitive, organic vegetables; keeping the facility up to date.
  • Organize and supervise seasonal contract crews with a strong emphasis on safety, production and quality - Crop tracking, troubleshooting, diagnosis of health or damage problems in the greenhouse environment.
  • Gathering, analyzing and summarizing data, using appropriate statistics.
  • Report growing trends and options, through regular participation in professional meetings.
  • Maximize value delivery, carry out trials of treatment options, benchmarking of other options.
  • Testing of improved methods and equipment to solve problems.
  • Assisting other site production operations as needed, incl. periodically leading or assisting the facility manager in coordinating various site, safety, facility within crop targets.

A proper fulfilment of this function requires:

  • A secondary level horticultural degree, with a higher education thinking level (NL = HBO+).
  • Background with tomato and/or pepper production with a very good understanding of organics.
  • Strong working knowledge of seeding biology/physiology, biological and their leverage points in greenhouse vegetable production.
  • A hands-on grower with a day-to-day involvement in growing, production and process/quality control.
  • Proven ability and desire to succeed in a production environment with tight cost and quality goals, production deadlines.
  • Good working knowledge of packing equipment and mechanical instruments used in greenhouse vegetable production incl. data gathering instruments for labour.
  • Able to manage moderately complex projects to successful completion with minimal or no supervision.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with others.
  • Able to lead by example, particularly regarding safety, professionalism, integrity, fairness, teamwork and a commitment and ability to lead an accident-free team.
  • Flexible regarding work hours and conditions, including sometimes long days, some weekends, cold/wet winters (sometimes) and hot humid summers (usually during busy production seasons.
  • Computer-literate, with good basic knowledge of experimental design.
  • A positive attitude and strong customer focus.
  • Fluent in English; spoken and written; Verbally able in Spanish is desirable (or willingness to learn).

Background

ROP is implementing a production and marketing promotion project in Badakhshan, Afghanistan funded by USAID. The objective of the project is to help farmers and merchants increase their incomes from fruit and nut production and marketing. The area has a tradition of fruit and nut production. However, most production and marketing practices are out-dated. For example, apricots are dried whole (with the pit) and without sulfuring. The result is a unappetizing black “rock.” The local cherry is a variety which contains mostly juice rather than fruit flesh. The cherries are dried whole. The result is a cherry seed covered with a thin layer of skin and pulp. More appealing than the apricots, the cherries have a wonderful cherry flavor and are exported to Iran. Dried mulberries are delicious; but, a bit gritty. Apples are very sweet, however, their very soft flesh limits their shelf-life to a few days off the tree. They are currently not processed. There are two type of walnuts. Honey is an important, related product that is to be promoted.

The remoteness of the region argues for processing that results in ambient temperature stable products. Technologies that are currently being funded via this project or a previous project include: a solar-powered fruit drier, an electrically powered line of nut shelling equipment, and standard honey processing equipment, such as, honey extractors and filters.

ROP wants to up-grade the processing of the existing fruits and nuts, stimulate the development of a processing industry and assist the processors/merchants maximize the value of the resulting products through the establishment of marketing channels linking the region to domestic and international markets. ROP would welcome the use of Fair Trade or other specialize channels and would assist in meeting the requirements to market in these channels. However, the development of profitable production, processing and marketing channels is the key objective. Marketing to the highest-value international niche markets is an ideal, not a requirement.

Technical Assistance Desired

ROP wants assistance from commercially-experienced food processing and marketing experts who can provide the following assistance:

  • Inspect (via parcel service) samples of available dried fruit and make recommendations on their possible current use and on their up-graded uses given better processing with technologies appropriate for northern Afghanistan.
  • Assist ROP install and operate small-scale up-graded processing technologies appropriate for northern Afghanistan.
  • Assist participating merchants market the up-graded products.
