Peru: More than a million boxes of bananas a year from Sullana

The Association of Small Producers of Organic Bananas, Saman and Annexes, (Appbosa) in the province of Sullana, exports an average of one million 16 thousand boxes of organic bananas to the United States, Canada, and Belgium.

This was announced by its president, Jose Santos Palomino, who also said that the FOB price (abroad) per box stood at $13 dollars. He also said that the marketing of the fruit had been increasing in the markets of North America and Europe.

This organization, which is now an agricultural cooperative, has a planted area of 600 hectares and has the potential to expand. It also has an export capacity of up to 25 containers per week with 1,080 boxes of 18.14 kg (40 pounds).

Conditions
Santos Palomino said that they had been cultivating the fruit for 15 years and, in 2013, they had received support from the I Procompite Regional to build and deploy a cold chamber and antechamber. When they had a high production of bananas, they stored them in the chamber, which allows them to reduce costs, as in the past they had to pay $300 per day for storage.

"Thanks to Procompite Regional, we now have a fully equipped cold chamber and antechamber where we can store 40 tons of bananas," he said.
