Due to supply shortages

Peru: International citrus prices expected to rise

Huamaní Packing and Processing is a Peruvian firm dedicated to the export of citrus, fresh asparagus and table grapes located in South Lima, in Pisco, Ica-Peru, and founded in 2005.

Regarding citrus production, Marita mentions that during the season she has noticed that the climate has had an impact on the ripening process, delaying the harvest by approximately two weeks. "We have had to delay our export programmes, but the most significant problem would be a delay in the post-harvesting duties, and hence, of all duties having an impact on the 2013 season." Says Marita.

On the opposite side of the scale, Peruvian citrus exporters have benefited from a lack of competitors compared to last season. "Apparently, there are good perspectives for the arrival of our citrus to all target markets because our competitors, such as South Africa, finished the season earlier than expected," affirms Marita Benavides. With fewer competitors, there is also less fruit in the market, and Benavides expects this to have a positive impact on prices.

At the moment, Huamaní Packing and Processing's main target markets are the US, Central America, South America, Continental Europe, England, Russia, the Nordic countries and Asia. Marita Benavides affirms that the firm would like to increase their exports to growing markets such as Russia, China, South East Asia, the Middle East and Central America.

During the 2011 season, Huamaní exported 240 containers of citrus, 50 of table grapes and the equivalent of 60 containers of fresh asparagus. "For 2012 we expect to export 290 containers of citrus, 55 containers of table grapes and approximately 70 containers of fresh asparagus," assures Marita, showing that they expect the export volume this year to be higher than last year's.

For the 2012 Peruvian citrus campaign, Benavides considers that "the main threat for this season is for the economic crisis in Europe to continue, affecting also their neighbouring countries, including those in South East Asia, China and the various destinations we export to." In any case, they expect to have a very good season with good prices and high quality fruit.
