Thai Ginger export to western markets increasing
The export volumes are increasing each year by 2%. The markets in North America and New Zealand prefer big ginger roots and as these markets are mainly driven by consumers with more spending power, customers need the best quality available.
“Thai ginger isn’t as well known as Chinese ginger. About five years ago, Chinese ginger came onto the world market with full force and most Asian markets are now saturated with Chinese produce,” says Thosapol Wonghostisatit of the Thai exporter Asia Exotic.
The Thai prices for ginger are influenced by its success. Thosapol says that when growers notice good prices for ginger, they’ll increase their production for this product. More production leads to more supply and consequently to lower prices. “Our prices used to be higher, but this year they’re on the same level as Chinese ginger. We’re exporting mainly to New Zealand, North America and Rotterdam,” says Boonmee.
Asia Exotic also exports exotic fruits such as lychee, rambutan, dragon fruit and mangosteen.
