Ecuador: Information systems to help increase efficiency in banana companies

Today, technological advances are also part of new ways of producing, packaging, marketing and export of various fruits and vegetables. As times change and with them new technologies for the industry comes along, companies must adapt to their environment and begin to see technology information not as luxury but as a tool for greater productivity and performance in their organizations.

This is the case at Agrosoft, a company from Ecuador which began providing software services to support the banana industry in Ecuador, but currently has extended to Central America, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador providing not only information technology to the banana industry but to the agricultural industry in general.

One of the main services which Agrosoft offers banana producers and exporters is various software. The first is Banaxass.Net v7 which is a Banana management and Agricultural System with 32 crop indicators where managers can see how production is coming along on the field, harvesting and packing.

On the other hand, the program BanaXass.Trace v3 reports cluster Traceability in the field, which is found through the use of a bar code that also has information about weight control and inventory of the clusters in the field and harvest online.

"We are currently extending these technologies to process food crops such as pineapple," assures Xavier Cardenas, director of Agrosoft.

In 2006, Agrosoft developed the first version of ExportXass, system to support the export of bananas where "the Shipping Plan (contracts with producers with quotas and prices per week), shipping, court orders, printed or by email to producers, fruit receipts in boxes at ports of embarkation for quality assessment, liquidation or the payment to producers by bank transfer or check, statistics, Statement of shipment to the Central Bank or MAGAP and shipping cost, among other indicators are registered. All online," says Cardenas.

Currently ExportXass is used in seven banana exporting companies that have a weekly export of 40,000 to 150,000 boxes. After adjustments and changes to improve, ExportXass is in its third version and Xavier hopes to continue expanding its use in the banana-exporting companies. Companies that through the program
can be much more efficient and effective when it comes time to export.

It should be noted that a great added value is that all Agrosoft systems are designed thinking not only about managers who can see reports from their offices, but also those who handle the programs: plant workers, who are recording information on a daily basis, minute by minute according to what is happening on the shop floor. "The software seamlessly operates from headquarters (server), the storage for materials, producers (via Internet) and fruit collection centers," says Xavier Cardenas to demonstrate that the program is made so that everyone can use it in the company without any complications or problems.
