Spain: Freshuelva asks Government to include red fruit sector in the new CAP

The Association of Strawberry Producers and Exporters from Huelva - Freshuelva - asked the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment for the strawberry and other berries to be included in the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Freshuelva had a meeting with the Spanish Federation of Fruits and Vegetables Producers and Exporters (FEPEX) and the secretary general for Agriculture and Food, Isabel GarcĂa Tejerina, to ask for those products to be accountable in the CAP negotiations.

Freshuelva exposed to the Government to "avoid discrimination situations" in the red fruits sector regarding other agricultural products and for those fruits to be included in the same direct payment regime. Strawberries and berries from Huelva are characterized by its intense working labor, and for generating activity in areas with high unemployment rates, being one of the most productive horticultural activities in the province.

On the other hand, the association exposed the need for the payment of beneficial practices for the environment in the fruit production to "objective and non-discriminatory" criteria. He proposes the inclusion in this payment plan for integrated production of a system that already subscribed more than 80% of the Huelva strawberry, apart from the cultivation diversification and area. Another motif pointed out by Freshuelva is that the new CAP accounts for the job creation and its maintenance. The strawberry sector is one of the economy motors and richness generator in the province, as on every campaign new 60,000 jobs are created.
