Belgium: Experiments with new herbs

"Round about Easter there was a lot of activity on the herb market. There was a considerable demand for various products" Steven Lauwers of herb growing company Vegobel tells. The company is specialised in supplying fresh herbs in pots all year round. "At the moment it is a little quieter on the market. This is also the result of the weather, which is not so warm."

This season the herb dealer sees an increasing demand for new product. "An example is the honey herb Stevia introduced by us this year. Also the lemon verbena is doing well. This we have since last year in the assortment. Also clients are more interested in alternative kinds of basil. Examples are small-leaf basil, Thai basil and red basil. These we have offered for years, but are now presented on a broader scale."

The entrepreneur also has lemon grass in his cultivation for the Chinese kitchen and buyers. "This product grows like reed and is used in sweet and sour sauces. This makes the sauce nice and fresh. The 'forgotten herbs' are also being rediscovered with for instance maggi-herb and also red sorrel."

What do the coming period and the summer look like for herbs? Steven hopes to have a good season. "It depends of course on the weather, but when that is good we expect a good season. Mainly during the weekends we are busier than through the week. In any case we are optimistic" he says with a mile.

Vegobel mainly supply supermarkets, hotels and restaurants. Vegobel grow their own herbs on an area of 2.5 HA. The herb specialist sells his product via Mechelse Veilingen in Belgium and the Netherlands. The larger part of the assortment is made up of organic herbs. "We are also very busy renewing our website in order to inform our clients even better" Steven concludes.
