After the South African 2011 avocado harvest being very small this year the normal volumes are expected. The export will, as estimated, amount to about 48,000 tons compared to 27,600 tons last year. But not only does this make the branch hopeful about the new season. They think that the avocado's from South Africa will find an open market in Europe. The Israeli season will end a little earlier than normal, is the expectation and the production in Spain will be influenced by the low temperatures in the beginning of February.
The avocado import from South Africa to Germany decreased by 41% to 3,588 tons. That is the lowest of the last six years. However, the influence on the total German avocado consumption was limited, as announced by the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI). The import from Spain and Peru were larger than the previous year. In total the German import was 29,000 tons based on provisional figures, about 4% more than in 2010. The Germans on average bought 276 grs. of avocado per household. This was even slightly more than in 2010.
