South Africa: Stargrow to release new red grapes varieties

The Stargrow Group is a group of affiliated companies specialising in the areas of cultivar development, plant breeding, nursery and the marketing of fruit.

Stargrow is a member of an international consortium consisting of leading cultivar developers (INN), and has license agreements with cultivar development groups in different countries including USA, Canada, Europe, Chile, Australia and New Zealand.

Stargrow Nurseries is a registered Plant Improvement Organization, meaning that Stargrow controls the phytosanitary and genetic requirements of their plant material within the government’s certification scheme. The product range consists of plant material of Apples, Pears, Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, Table Grapes, Wine Grapes, Olives, Cherries, Raspberries, Strawberries and Citrus.

Stargrow Africa is a company that focuses on the supply of plant material, agricultural equipment, irrigation and technology to African markets.

Stargrow Fruit Marketing supply fresh fruits to the Far East, Middle East, South East Asian and African markets. With the main goal of supplying their clients in these markets with a consistent quality on a continued basis, Stargrow Fruit Marketing is also involved in the exports of fresh fruit from other countries such as Egypt (where they have a sister company), Chile, Argentina and Italy.

Waldo Maree from the company, explains, "we have multiplication and breeding facilities at a number of locations in the Western Cape. Stargrow Cultivar Development is a private deciduous fruit breeder in South Africa who breeds pomefruit, stonefruit and table grapes."

One popular variety is the Cambria late Navel variety, it has good internal quality and excellent storage capabilities, it is premium variety. It is very grower friendly and gives a high production. The variety is grown in South Africa and is being developed in Mediterranean countries as well as Spain, Egypt, Chile and the US. Waldo says the market feedback has been very positive.

Stargrow is also releasing two new early red seedless table grape varieties, Stargrape 1 (see photo) and Stargrape 2. These varieties have shown to crop well and produces good size berries with outstanding colour without any colour treatment. More information will be published soon.
