"Bart Nemegheer: "Increasing demand organic potatoes"

First Israeli organic primeur potatoes at De Aardappelhoeve

At the De Aardappelhoeve in Tielt, Belgium this week the first five containers with Israeli primeur potatoes arrived. According to Bart Nemegheer demand for organic potatoes is increasing and the organic assortment of De Aardappelhoeve is also continually increasing. This will be the fourth year that the company will import Israeli organic potatoes.

"For organic potatoes chemical germination inhibitors are not allowed to be used. In spring when the potatoes will germinate quickly it is difficult to supply organic potatoes. Therefore we always start with primeur potatoes as early as possible. And luckily the cultivation conditions in Israel were good" Bart tells.

He sells potatoes of the variety Nicola to amongst others, Belgian retailers. The Israeli potatoes traditionally are the first primeur potatoes and Bart expects to be able to supply these till April/May, after which primeur potatoes will be imported from Portugal, Italy and the Western European countries.
