Algeria: the government ready to help banana producers

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Abdelkader Bouazghi, has urged farmers to turn to banana production. In order to encourage them, he announced that he would support those who wish to embark on the adventure. “Our services are ready to accompany and support farmers, in order to develop the sector, obtain a world-class product and to help stabilize the price of this fruit on the national market by providing the means necessary to overcome any obstacle.”

This announcement was made during a visit to a farm where 20 ha of bananas will be planted in February, with a goal to reach 100 ha by the end of 2019. The manager of the plantation wants to regulate the price of the banana on the Algerian market, so as to adapt to the international prices (between 70 and 80 da [0.6 and 0.7 USD] per kg).
