During the winter months, berry fruits of exotic origin traditionally flood the Western European market. At Wuppertal's wholesale market, Peruvian blueberry berries are also finding their way to regional retailers. At the same time, Iberian raspberries and blackberries as well as greenhouse strawberries from the neighboring country of the Netherlands also arrive in large quantities, explains Cevat Cavusoglu, Managing Director of Fresh & Cash GmbH.
Cheap blueberries, lucrative greenhouse strawberries
Peruvian blueberries of the popular brand Camposol are currently being negotiated at relatively low prices (€0.50 per cup). ''Since the last few days, the volumes are growing significantly, which is why we have to expect a slight oversupply,''says Cavusoglu, who gets his blueberries primarily via wholesale partners in the Dutch fresh centers Venlo and Rotterdam.
The Wuppertal wholesaler specializes primarily in the marketing of soft fruits and presents a diverse assortment. "We market the full, seasonal soft fruit range, from Dutch greenhouse strawberries to Spanish and Portuguese raspberries and blackberries to overseas blueberries. Dutch greenhouse strawberries of the Elsanta variety sell very quickly, and at interesting prices. At the same time, we are seeing a great demand for Iberian raspberries. Blackberries, on the other hand, are lagging somewhat behind and especially in winter, demand is relatively low.''

In the area of soft fruit, a lot has already happened in recent years. Soft fruits like cranberries, cranberries and kiwi berries are always present on the market, but only for short periods. ''Kiwi berries are increasingly available and we are regularly offering them, from Belgium for instance. Last week we still marketed some from Portugal.''
