Many opportunities in Africa

Renzo Piraccini, president of Cesena Fiera, went to Ghana looking for new markets and opportunities for Italian companies. The goal was to introduce Macfruit, thus establishing a partnership that will bring businesses and visitors to the Rimini fair (8-10 May 2019).

Renzo Piraccioni, “Africa is a continent full of opportunities for fruit and vegetables. It counts a population of 1.200 billion which will double within 2050. It can offer many opportunities for the Italian fruit and vegetable sector. Not only regarding the technology and the seeds, but also regarding the marketing of Italian products demanded by a growing upper-middle urban class. I have said this many times: the African continent will grow, the first who understands that will have thousands of opportunities”:

Supermarket in Accra

The 2019 edition of Macfruit was hosted by the Italian ambassador in Ghana, Giovanni Favilli. This edition will have the sub-Sahara Africa as a partner. Many people were there: the Ice office manager Paolo De Vito, the Italian consul Massimiliano Colsuonno Taricone, the president of the Vegetable Producers and Exporters of Ghana, fruit exporters, importers and buyers of a distribution chain.

Apples are imported

In 2016, Ghana produced 6.5 million tons of fruit and vegetables, most of which were devoted to internal consumption. The most important fruits for exports are pineapples, mangoes and avocados. Thanks to the development of the modern distribution, Africa is increasingly turning into a market for produce imported from South Africa and Europe – especially with regard to apples, pears and kiwis.
