The Alicante region of Vega Baja will become the artichoke capital of the world for the celebration of the 10th International Symposium on Artichoke, Cardoon and their Wild Relatives, which will take place in March 12 to 15, 2019 in the municipality of Orihuela.
This event, held every three years, is the world's most important international event devoted to artichokes and it brings the most relevant researchers and international companies together.
The congress returns to Spain after more than ten years since the symposia of Lorca (2006) and Tudela (2003) and after being held in France (2009), Italy (2012) and Argentina (2015).
The 2019 edition is co-organized by the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) together with the associations Artichoke of the Vega Baja and Artichoke of Spain, through the ISHS (International Society Horticultural Science).
The City Councils of Orihuela and Almoradí are also collaborating, as well as various public and private entities that will make it possible for this symposium to be an important event at international level.
In the presentation of the Congress, which took place at Fruit Attraction, in Madrid, the professor in the area of Food Technology of the UMH and member of the organizing committee of the symposium, Pedro J. Zapata, said that the event will address issues related to innovation and development in the entire production process.
There will also be sessions on biodiversity, genetic improvement and varieties; production, water and nutrients, as well as on issues related to post-harvest, such as processing and quality control.
Other issues addressed will include the crop's marketing, as well as its nutritional and healthy properties.
The objective of this meeting, according to Pedro J. Zapata, is to make it possible for "all the scientific knowledge generated around these issues to be transferred to the sector, so that it can apply all the advances and the most innovative techniques. Hence the importance of bringing companies and researchers together."
