UK reliance on Spanish horticulture is a fact

The UK is currently dependent on Spanish fruit and vegetable imports. This dependency was made evident from the most recently published agro-food trading figures. They were released by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture.

In 2017, Spain's overseas trade with the UK amounted to 8% of the country's total exports of agro-food products. Spanish trade with the UK also came to 3% of imports. For Spain, this meant a value of EUR2.792 million.

More than 70% of the total export value of agro-food products can be divided into five groups: fruit and vegetables, beverages, plant-based preparations, oils, and fats. Here, fruit and vegetables amount to almost half of the total exports. These numbers are regarding the most traded Spanish product groups to the UK.

Ranking
Spain is, with a share of 36%, the biggest exporter of red fruit, kiwis, and kaki fruit to the UK. They are followed by the Netherlands (12%) and Chile (9%).

When it comes to citrus, Spain is also the largest exporter to the UK. They have a 38% share. In second place, with 12%, is South Africa, with Germany in third place at 6%.

Spain also exports the most vegetables to the UK. It has a share of 26%, followed by Italy with 22% and the Netherlands, with 4%.
