China: Red choy sum on the market one month early

At present, many fresh food markets in Wuhan have placed red choy sum on the stalls, but the taste is not good, especially the roots and stems of the vegetables are not thick enough, and the end part is too hard. Experts said that red choy sum has very high requirements for temperature difference between morning and evening. The normal time to be listed is in mid-November. This year it entered market more than a month earlier. Although the price is attractive, it is still not a good bargain in terms of its taste.

The main reason for the early listing is that Wuhan has had plenty of  sunshine and warm weather since September, which has promoted an early ripening of local choy sum, forming a market with fast growth, early listing and price-friendly people.

According to reports, the growth and storage of red choy sum are dependent on the temperature difference between morning and evening. From mid-September to National Day holiday, the low temperature in Wuhan accelerates the growth rate of red choy sum, but the accumulation of sugar is not enough, the roots are not thick and resulted in a poor taste.

At present, Wuhan Dongxihu, Jiangxia and Caidian and other new urban areas have planted choy sum in large areas, and the market is very large in the middle of the season. However, the subsequent growth and taste of the red choy sum are closely related to the weather conditions. If the weather is cold after winter or if it encounters extreme weather, the next growth will be affected and the price will go higher.
