An announcement for the protection of Lake Erhu caused unrest in Dali, Yunnan. The protection includes a complete ban on garlic farming in the vicinity of Lake Erhu. The upper reaches of the lake are fertile and the climate is suitable for agriculture, which has a local history of more than 1300 years. In the last 25 years, this area has become an important garlic production area.
Wang Ligao of the Eryuan County Department of Agriculture stated that farmers often apply excessive amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers and harmful pesticides. The fertilizer pollutes the water that ends up in Lake Erhu.
