South Tyrol: wholesale prices for apples

Economic research institute WIFO in Bolzano regularly publishes a list of wholesale prices for various products. With the publication of these prices for the most important South Tyrolean apple varieties, a broad picture of the situation on the apple market is painted. Prices for September 2018 are now available.

A look at the latest wholesale prices for the month of September shows that first prices for the new harvest -for most of the varieties available- are roughly at the level of 2016, so they are significantly lower than in the previous year. In the month of September (on the far right in the graph), WIFO shows the prices for the Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith and Red Delicious apple varieties. The prices published are always gross prices, from which the costs of storage, transport, marketing etc. still have to be deducted in order to obtain an indication of the expected payments.

Regarding the Gala, Granny Smith and Red Delicious varieties, the chart shows that prices are slightly above those of September 2016 (in the left-most chart). Only for the Golden Delicious price levels are still significantly above that of the September months 2016 and 2017. Compared to the previous month of August there is currently a significant decline in the Golden Delicious.

The graph below shows price development since September 2016.

For the graph, an average value is again determined from the mean values for the individual fruit sizes of quality level I ("Prima"), as determined by the economic research institute WIFO. Of course, if a variety is not available, the WIFO does not publish any prices, so the line of the corresponding variety in the graph is interrupted for those months.
