Peru's blueberry sector has achieved higher yields and has more hectares in production than in the previous year, which suggests that in the next campaign, Peru will surpass Spain, the third biggest producer of this product, with an average annual growth rate of 130.9%. This increase would place this country very close to Canada and Chile.
Fernando Gutierrez Perez, a specialist in Peruvian Agroindustrial Products, said that "in 2017 the highest volumes were achieved in week 40. In the same period of 2018 there has been a 100% increase in production, which can surpass the 80,000 tons of blueberries."
The region of La Libertad is the biggest producer of blueberries in the country, with about 85% of the production. The main companies of the sector, such as Camposol and Talsa-Hortifrut, are located in this region. In addition, the Chavimochic Irrigation Project, which has transformed the extensive deserts of the valleys of the Chao, Virú, Moche and Chicama rivers into vast productive fields with export crops, is being developed there.
