Costa Rica's melon production window goes from January to the end of April of each year. During this period of time, the country becomes an important supplier of melons for the United States and the European Union. Importers who need to guarantee their participation in the market during this period prefer to work with the Costa Rican melon due to the certainty with which the country manages to fulfil its commitments and the quality of its fruit.
Like any agricultural product, the melon is exposed to all kinds of climate and pest risks that can damage or end production at any time. The special weather conditions and the ability of producers to control adverse situations minimize these risks, and allows producers to comply with a high percentage of their commitments every year.
Most of the melons and watermelons in the country are produced in small and medium-sized farms with a high social and environmental commitment, which allows a strong control of all the variables that guarantee the success of the crop.
The close communication between producers and buyers allows the sector to respond quickly and effectively to new requirements or changes in the market, minimizing risks and ensuring compliance with contracts throughout the chain.
This is why Costa Rica hasn't been displaced by other countries, which may have more land, lower costs, or be closer to the destination markets, and why it continues to be a reliable provider of melons in its production window.
Melones del Sol will be present at the Fruit Attraction fair, 10 D08.
