Humus - an ancient remedy still used today

New problems solved with ancient revisited remedies - this is the philosophy at Albertoni, one of the few businesses in Italy producing humus from earthworms. In Italy, almost all agricultural lands are poor in organic matter. In some cases, they are near the first stage of desertification. And the structure of the soil itself is also compromised, again due to the lack of organic matter. Humus is an ideal remedy, and it can be produced on a large scale.

"It forms over 24 months due to the incessant work of earthworms. We then pack it in 25 kg bags and sell it to agricultural businesses. It is widely used in organic farming and even more if soils have been fertilized with synthetic chemicals for years," explains Maria Devincenzi.

Worm-farming is the modern answer to environmental problems: the lack of organic matter and the use of chemical fertilizers have depleted the soil and led to negative consequences for the environment. The leading Community regulations on organic cultivation stress how an agricultural system must optimize the functional connection between crop production and farming, as combining the two is the only way to start that "virtuous circle" that helps restore the soil and its fertility.

Worm-farming is the professional way of obtaining Humus, a high-quality fertilizer and soil conditioner.
"The Humus produced by our company is obtained from Californian red earthworms and bovine manure taken from non-intensive livestock farms. The process is apparently simple, but it entails a constant integration of manual labor with mechanical means."

"Pure humus obtained through worm-farming can be used for organic crops as defined by Legislative Decree 29 April 2010 no. 75. Our company is registered in the Fertilizer Registry (no. 02028/17) at the Ministry for Agricultural Policy. The product undergoes all necessary checks as defined in the Mipaaft regulation on the production and commercialization of fertilizers."
