Prospects of product varieties in Taiwanese mushroom industry

The Taiwanese mushroom industry has a century-old history from the cultivation of shiitake mushrooms to the establishment of Mushroom Kingdom. The Taiwanese mushroom industry is currently worth close to 10 billion yuan [1.44 billion USD] and has become an important part of the Taiwanese vegetable industry. The main variety, in terms of both production value and production volume, is still the shiitake, but the king oyster mushroom has replaced the enoki mushroom as the runner-up.

The shiitake industry has seen reduced production in the last two years and at times even experienced a complete halt of production. If there is no improvement in mushroom variety, quality of wood mulch, and temperature control during cultivation, then production volumes decrease will continue to grow worse in the next two or three years and the price will continue to rise.

The production volume of enoki mushrooms has been in decline for years because other mushroom varieties have gradually taken over. Export has been problematic as domestic enoki mushroom production in China increases and Korea gradually expands its export into the USA, Canada, and Indo-China. It would be surprising if the enoki mushroom industry is able to maintain its current position in the next two or three years.

The production volume and price of king oyster mushrooms has been stable in recent years. This is mainly because of the high level of technology in king oyster mushroom cultivation. This stability is likely to continue for another two or three years. The production of common oyster mushrooms suffers from a problem with wood mold that does not seem to have a solution. Other varieties have gradually seized the market share of common oyster mushrooms. The production volume of common oyster mushrooms will likely decline in the next two or three years, though the price will remain stable.
