Luisa, the ‘soft seed’ grape: a niche with great potential

The Luisa grape – patented by the Grape & Grape Group – comes from a 100% Italian supply chain. This grape variety is grown on a land spreading between Puglia and Sicily of about 110 hectares.

Luisa grape is characterized by large berries, a thin bright yellow skin, a tough pulp and a sweet but slightly muscat taste. But mostly, the Luisa grape has some sporadic herbaceous seeds which do not make the chewing difficult, but rather they give the product those important antioxidants and nutritive properties typical of seeds.

In the last few years, many experiments have been successfully conducted. In this way, the Grape & Grape Group project keeps stabilizing the consistency of its commercial aims: a significant commercial activity is being promoted by Grape & Grape Group and the 8 partners. This plan granted the distribution of grape to the most important Italian distribution chains, such as COOP, Turin and Milan wholesale markets, the Esselunga of Milan and Novara (Fra. Va), Unicoop Tirreno, Tosano Supermarkets, Alco Despar (OP Agritalia), Migross, CRAI, Elite and DIMAR. Additionally, the marketing will start shortly in Germany and France wholesale markets.

The group has recently started exporting to overseas markets, towards North America (Canada), where the made in Italy brand is extremely appreciated.

The Luisa grape has received interesting feedback. Alberto Mastrangelo, Grape & Grape marketing manager, observed “It is a good product, on the production side as well as on the commercial side. Starting next year, I think we are going to establish a more specific role for our grape. That is, we would like to implement the Luisa grape within the supply schedule starting already from August. Perhaps, it can partially substitute the Victoria variety initially, for this could get not many brilliant results by then”. Alberto Mastrangelo concludes, “From August until October, I think that our Luisa is capable of increasing its market share thanks to its taste, durability and colour.

The testing phase conducted together with Eataly has just finished. The aim of this collaboration was to introduce new commercial brands and new patented varieties. The results showed that the Luisa grape performed better than any red varieties. It was especially successful among clients of all ages.

The bright yellow colour – which stands out from the packages (750 gr or 50 gr/ 1 kg baskets) – and its light and muscat taste makes the Luisa grape greatly appreciated by everyone. Tests conducted in stores demonstrated that children especially enjoy this grape.
