For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Canadians ‘Think Pink’ when purchasing onions this fall

With breast cancer accounting for 25 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in Canadian females and 1 in 8 women predicted to develop the disease in their lifetime, this fall, a Western Canadian produce grower, shipper, packer Thomas Fresh, will be highlighting this important cause in the produce section of grocery stores.

During October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and into November, Thomas Fresh’s 2 lb and 3 lb ‘Think Pink’ Medium Yellow Onions are available now in pink packaging. Proceeds from each onion bag sold will support funding high-quality breast cancer research through the Canadian Cancer Society, the country’s largest national charitable funder of research into the disease.

“Progress is being made against breast cancer. Early detection and increased screening rates combined with better treatment therapies has resulted in a 44 percent decrease in the breast cancer death rate since the late 1980’s,” says Jessica Dirom, Regional Director of Philanthropy for the Canadian Cancer Society. “Breast cancer is still the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in Canada. It is for these reasons, that we and corporate partners like Thomas Fresh are committed to supporting breast cancer research.”

“As a company who is in the industry of providing fruits and vegetables, we feel it is our duty to give back, and to use our brand as a vessel for important health related causes,” Roy Hinchey, CEO of Thomas Fresh shares. With breast cancer being a cause close to their hearts, Thomas Fresh sought to give back to Canadians impacted by this life-altering disease.

“Our limited-edition onions are named, ‘Think Pink’ with the aim to inspire Canadians to keep health at top of mind, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The small steps individuals make to eat a greater amount of fruits and vegetables can have long term benefits of well-being” Hinchey continues.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, about half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the health of Canadians. Eating well is an important part of reducing your cancer risk and begins with consuming a variety of foods each day, including vegetables and fruits to get the nutrients you need for good health.

“The Think Pink breast cancer onion is a project we’ve wanted to share with the Canadian marketplace for quite some time. We believe this special onion can provide a unique opportunity for shoppers to support and connect with a noble cause.” Hinchey states. “We are honoured to work alongside the Canadian Cancer Society.”

Consumers can find ‘Think Pink’ Onions at various major retailers in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba until November 30th, 2018.
