Focus on new Limgroup varieties during Asparagus Days

'Green Starlim asparagus suits growing conditions in the Mediterranean'

With the introduction of the Aspalim variety, Dutch breeding company Limgroup has created a new dimension in the production of green asparagus, particularly in the northern European and North American sectors. At the upcoming Asparagus Days (16 to 18 October) in Cesena, Italy, green asparagus will be the focus of attention. Together with the other new varieties like the Starlim, Limgroup BV has set itself the goal to enable the cultivation of high quality green asparagus to growers in the warm Mediterranean region as well.

Aspalim is a green asparagus that meets the needs of the modern grower. It scores high with an extraordinary quality, early harvest and particularly high yield. Aspalim has already made a name for itself in the northern European asparagus industry. With its unique product features, the variety is a clear addition to the existing Limgroup range. The entire range of green asparagus includes Gijnlim & Portlim, allowing the grower to deliver high quality stems throughout the whole of the asparagus season.

Starlim
In addition to the Aspalim, the Starlim should be mentioned as well: This green variety has been in development since 2016 and is particularly well suited for early cultivation in regions with a warm or Mediterranean climate, says Sjaak Berden, spokesman for the breeding company. The variety also delivers very high yields at the start of the season, which is why growers van put large quantities in the market directly at the start of the harvest. The Starlim also combines uniquely high levels of production with a high average stem weight. As a result, the crop yield of this variety is clearly above the levels of previous varieties.

In addition to all this, the quality of the Starlim is worth mentioning. Because of the beautiful top ends, large parts of the harvest are classified as Class I, which means more than 75 percent of the yield has a diameter of over 12 mm. The previous feedback from the industry (growers and retailers) is promising, says the Limgroup management . Due to the optical characteristics and the external attractiveness, the product is also immediately recognisable in the trade.
